Most teams better players are catchers, shortstops, or pitchers. I was told they only nominated 1 catcher for the Region D squad. The other 3 that were picked are considered to be the next 3 best players. So they were chosen and placed on the team in their respective position (which was catcher) Only the catcher from VA High can be nominated as a catcher for the all-state team. And as for the 2nd team---there was a 4 way tie for the position. Nobody gets voted off (it's about the girls being recognized), so that is where your 8 catchers come from! Also, baseball follows the same guidelines---it could happen with the boys as well.
